Good mornin' Tawny...I
Good mornin' Tawny...I suppose my first goal this morning would be to get OUT of my jammies and into the car to head to the office. We were all up very late in my house last night searching outside in the rain for a lost kitten who as it turned out had somehow gotten "lost" inside my bedroom closet!
After some tearful interludes with the girls and a promise that I would stay up as late as it took to keep checking both front and back doors, Chip wandered out of my closet wondering what all the fuss was about at around 1:30am....grrrr!

Awww
Glad you found the kitty, Jayne
. Many a night I've done the same, believe me! and hey... working in the jammies one of my FAVE things about being a writer LOL.
Thanks for directing me to the room. I'm still finding my way around. Let me haul in the cushy settees, huge silk pillows and a nice bear skin rug for our hunks to pose for us on. The caterer is bringing in the chocolate fountain and margarita machine - feel free to share YOUR favorite treats and we'll kick off the creation of the Ultimate Man Plan!

I'm ready to get started!
Hey Tawny! I love goal setting and can't wait to hear your tips
I'll provide the tortilla chips with salsa and guacamole along with some cheesy quesadillas and fajitas. I think they'll go well with your margaritas
Except now I'm hungry - is it too early for a late afternoon snack? *g*
So glad your kitty was safe and sound, Jayne!

Does She Dare? and the Man Plan
The funnest thing about writing Does She Dare was creating the heroine's Man Plan. Her ultimate outline of what she wanted in a guy -- and how he'd fulfil her fantasies (she was pretty specific on the fantasy angle, too).
Now, Isbel's fantasies were of the sensual nature, so her Man Plan definitely reflected that... but this got me to thinking. Wouldn't it be fun to create YOUR ulitmate man plan? A list of specifics, of what makes a guy perfect and what you definitely don't want? The Man Plan is the perfect introduction to setting goals, btw - which we'll be talking about too. But every plan is best started with a dream, an ultimate BIG picture wish. So we'll start with a hunk (where better?)
What do you think? Set aside reality for a moment (especially if you have a signifigant other) and play What If... lets start with the biiiiig dreaming... . Isabel started her fantasy Man Plan by thinking of the one guy who she totally crushed on, her ultimate fantasy guy (one who she just happened to know). For our game, lets go with a fantasy guy we don't know! Which famous hottie hunk would YOU want to base your Man Plan on?
My pick? Johnny Depp. YUMMMMMY!!! He's gorgeous, multi talented (dude can actually SING), loves kids and has that gentleness under his bad boy exterior-- and best of all, he's got a great sense of humor.

Man Plan
Did someone mention food and hunks? I'm so there! Tawny, you are the goddess of goal-setting unlike me. I wish I was better with setting and keeping goals. My hunk - love Gerard Butler for one. My goal would be to have a shot at him before a couple of my other good friends who want him find out and kill me first. :)

List making
Hi Tawny,
I've never been one to make lists. I usually forget where I put them. What I've been doing is taking all my ideas at the end of my work in progress. That way when I need something I know where to find it. Always open to new ideas.
Marlene
Tawny and goal setting
Hmmmm. TawnyDepp, you're poking me where it hurts--in the goals.
Been trying to figure out how I can get re-excited about some goals I've let slide. I tend to get started, then when I hit a wall, I stop or get sidetracked. Maybe just too many irons in the fire, but I wonder if I trust myself enough to let the success happen, ya know?
Oh and Does She Dare? Most excellent. I'm about half way through, and I loved Double Dare, but I'm thinkin this is my favorite of yours so far. I can REALLY relate to the heroine and her insecurities.
Though I'm not quite up to her level of facing them down.
Hi, Tawny. A-M waving hello
Hi, Tawny. A-M waving hello to everyone. Sometimes I think I chart and make lists to the point of sabotaging my sanity. lol But that being said, I still MUST have them. Dang it, where did that darn plotpoint list go to? I said I must have them, not that I know where they are. lol Tawny your stories are awesome, so you're doing something definitely right. An organized life, desk, and mind? Yep, that's Tawny.
Goal setting and snacks...
Okay, if its goal setting and snack time, I'm SO there! Hee Hee! I make lists constantly, set goals twice a year and review them quarterly...yep, quarterly...and look at them everyday. I love the idea you used for the Man Plan. I actually made a man plan (w/o the total fantasy part...should have done that....) when I was single and let me tell ya' it worked for me too. I got everything I wanted and then some in my DH, so hey, make a Man Plan ladies! Grins. Your heroine and I are proof positive that it works. VBG.
So, Ms. TawnyDepp, did you like seeing Sweeney? And see him win a Golden Globe? Grins.
BTW, I just bought Does She Dare, loved the concept. I really enjoyed Double Dare and love your writing. Can't wait for the weekend when I can dive into it!
GO Lindsey!
Hey...first come, first serve here at Man Plan central LOL. You claimed him, so run, baby, run!
Sometimes I think goal setting CAN become too unwieldy --its like plotting a book. if you spend all your time plotting and percolating (as Kathleen Long calls it) and 'thinking' about how to get the story just right... you aren't doing. Goals are the same. And hey -pantzing is a totally viable choice for goals, too! I am pretty sure the Plan Police won't come haul anyone away if the idea of setting goals gives them hives LOL.
Altho... if the Plan Police was Gerard Butler in a tight blue uniform...

GREAT plan, Marlene
Hey, I love the idea of putting all of your story notes at the end of your manuscript, Marlene!
You're right, its so easy to lose lits -- but a goal is something even bigger. Your goal, lets say, is to sell a book. Even if you don't outline the steps toward achieving that goal, you keep it front and center in your mind and every time you open that manuscript - and read your notes - you're activily working the goal.
And that, my friend, rocks!

I think I love you
Thanks, Cassandra
I have to say, as much as I LOVED Audra in Double Dare (she was so bad), I love Dante in Does She Dare? even more *g*. Isabel is the queen of goals, and yes, she's big on facing down her fears LOL. I want to be here when I grow up.
I think, often, we can subtly sabotage ourselves. Like you say, over committing, not trusting our choices, etc. Worrying about it just adds to the stress, too.
Not to nag on list making (you could just do this mentally -lounge in a hot bubble bath and let the idea mull in your brain *g*) but what if you outline what success will mean, in your mind? You know, what will change --good and bad. After you do, you might get a bigger picture of whether its really stopping you -and if it is, you'll be able to see why and find ways to address the issues.

Waving back to my list-making friend
I hear you on keeping track of it all, A-M!!! It can be frustrating and make a gal crazy! I was like that with calendars. I had one for writing, with my goals and schedules, one for work and one for the family. I had so many overbooked, crazy days! Believe me, I've tried quite a few of the time-management/organization things out there (day planners, notebooks, etc) and nothing clicked for me until I got this Outlook and One Note program! OMG I love them.
So I think, for each of us, its just finding a system that works. Like you, I'm in love with lists and charts, but they only work if we can find them LOL.
and thank you soooo much for saying you love my stories ;) You're such a sweetie!

Man Plan
Hi, my name is Lisa and I'm a planner, so I loved Does She Dare. I was really thinking Isobel would have a color coded Excel spreadsheet like someone else I know...
What kinds of goals help you get a book written? Is it a certain word count per day or a certain number of chapters by a specific date? What tactics work best for you? I find that I need to set deadlines for myself or I procrastinate too much.
Do you use any kind of special software like any of the Omni products? I recently started using Storyist because I would get so caught up in the minutae of Word that I wouldn't write.
And my fictional Man Plan? Alex O'Loughlin, fangs or no.
YES! I love it when a plan comes through!!
GO Duchesse! I'm always so excited to hear stories like yours. YOu not only work your goals, but the review process is so great! I'll be honest, I've set goals and not looked at them again for months, and hey - even without giving them any focused attention, I've still made major progress. But never as much as when I reveiw them, focus on them and keep them in mind on a more regular basis.
It doesn't have to be formal or stodgy either. A picture of Johnny Depp surrounded by a few words of what I want to accomplish, stuck on my bulletin board will work just as well as a formal business plan LOL
BTW - You are the Ultimate Man Planner! Congrats on that, and on snagging the ultimate prize :-)

Hey Tawny (waving) My
Hey Tawny (waving)
My plan is to sip my way through the drinks
.
My man actually sabotaged my plan. He wasn't supposed to show up for a couple more years when I had more time to invest in a relationship. But you know what they say about the best laid plans? The planner gets laid.
Oops, I so didn't say that, did I?
Can't wait to read Does She Dare. Must say this book really calls to me. I'm putting it on my to-do list, right now.
Does She Dare
I read Does She Dare over the weekend, so I can cross that off my 2008 To Be Read Booklist Plan.
I told you I was a planner.
12 Step for Planners
Hey Lisa ;) Watch out for those crazy people with color-coded spreadsheets LOL.
GREAT question on book writing goals. Because I've put in a few years figuring out what works for me, writing-wise, I know I'll spend about 1 1/2 to 2 months on the partial, and about the same to finish the rest of the book. Using that as a guide, I look at my deadline (even before I sold, I created deadlines for myself thinking that I should learn to manage them before rather than after) and look at the calendar. I divide my pages to be written by how many weeks I have, and then factor in any events (such as holidays, promo events, etc) that could affect my output, and create a weekly goal.
For me, I don't do well with a daily page goal. Thats just me though, some people rock them. But a weekly page count gives me the breathing room to adjust to life as I need it.
I don't use any writing related software, although I'm going to check those two out ;) I do use OneNote and Outlook for both organizing and keeping track of my tasks, schedule and all my goals. I just got these programs last summer and OMG I love them!!!

Good plan on the drink sipping, I'll join you
OMG ROFLMAO on the planner getting laid *snort* YOU kill me!!! I definitely like that kind of planning!!! And hey, what perfect proof that a Man Plan works LOLOL.
You're totally right about timing, though. I'm big on flexibility. I'll be honest, I've yet to set a goal or make a plan that went exactly according to my outline. Being able to adjust (especiallyif it means getting laid... just sayin') is vital!
I cant' wait to hear what you think of DSD

I agree with so many of
I agree with so many of you. I'm in love with Dante. Donna, you are so funny, but you know, when love comes along it comes along, right? I had NO intention of falling in love much less marrying at the age of 22 -- I mean really, what does a 22-year-old know? But the heart wants . . .
Tawny, I'm curious if you ever had a man plan in your real life? Hmmmm, fess up, girl. Inquiring minds want to know!
Go Isabel!
Hi, Tawny!
Sorry I'm late to the party. Hope there are margharitas left!
"Does She Dare" is a great read and I LOVE the cover!
Every time I go to Ireland I have a Man Plan....even met the foremost matchmaker on my first trip. I left him a list LOL
Tawny's Fantastic Read
Hey Tawny! As someone who tends to muddle along until things get done, I'm just in awe of your goal-setting strategies. Hoping to pick up some tips here.
LOVED DOES SHE DARE--the set-up, the snappy, sexy writing and the love scenes--hoo Mama! That book is HAWT!
Madame la Duchesse, you need to write a self-help book about that Man Plan of yours--I'm sure many women would like to know your secret!
Timing? What timing?
I so agree that we have NO control over when our perfect someone show's up. I do think we can --with the help of a man plan (heehee)-- get a good feeling for what we DO want when our someone shows up, but timing? Nope, out of our hands.
Now, did I ever make a Man Plan? Hmmm.... fessions huh?
Okay -bribe time :-D I'll tell you ALL about my own personal man plan experiences... On Friday. hehehehee... you just have to hang out this week and keep me company to get the dirt.

I am SO jealous of your trips to Ireland, Joanie T!! It sounds like you have such an amazing time... right down to the list-leaving LOL.
So... I'm curious - ya want to share some of the deets on the matchmaking list you left behind?
and thanks!! I am so in love with the cover of Does She Dare? too - actually, so is my husband LOL. Definitely not for the same reason, though.

The whole goal thing
Back from my daytime errands.
You know, when I was an events planner, I was a plotter. I would lay out my spreadsheets of logistics schedules and volunteers and venues and performers, and people's jaws would drop. It was the only way to keep track of it and I was actually pretty good at it!
Switch over to MY OWN goals--not those of someone else (you know, the event or organization I was working for) and it doesn't work. No spreadsheet will get my muse going. No volunteer schedule will get the girls in the basement to show up.
Have any of you all switched careers--from one that was working out to the one you really wanted--writing--and your old techniques didn't work?????
Tawny, oh-yoda-of-all-that-is-goals
, how do you get your muse to cooperate?
Non-planners
Confession: most of my life has been unplanned, including all the children!
I am, deep down inside, very plan-averse. Not that I don't have goals - I certainly do! But I am allergic to index cards and color-coded anything. Not being visually-oriented, I wouldn't remember what the colors were supposed to stand for!
Tawny, I liked your comment about the ponderings in the bathtub counting as "plans". They had better count, because they are all I have!
As to writing, I have characters that quickly develop themselves into real people and start getting into real trouble. I really have no way of knowing exactly who they are or how they will react to situations until i start writing, so outlines do me no good. My willful characters refuse to cooperate with outlines!
I'm not sure you can make a non-planner into a planner. I have managed projects and done a good job of it. Organized trips and industry meetings and classes. I can do all of that, but as Cassondra said, I can't apply it to me. *sigh*
I suppose I'll have to leave the plans to you planner types. I must admit, I did have a bit of a man plan in college, which is how I "selected" my husband. Hey, if you're ever only going to have one real plan, it had better pan out, right?
Caren's characters
I want THEM.
Caren, I want YOUR characters.
Mine aren't cooperating.
Caren, I so know what you
Caren, I so know what you mean. I begin with a general idea of who my characters are and what they will or will not do.
Then they go ahead and mess around with my mind. I swear they're like recalcitrant children. The more you try to get them to do YOUR bidding, the less compliant they are!
