The Lobby: 100,000 Book Challenge

As Sammy Newcomer approaches the Lobby of the eHarlequin.com 2008 Book Challenge, a curious hum fills the air. It's not until one of the massive double doors swings open to grant them entrance that they realize the hum is voices.

Hundreds of readers have gathered here, to celebrate a shared love of reading and to participate in an awesome undertaking.

100,000 books are to be read, and in a year.. and the prize... well the prize beyond the enjoyment of great books, is to share the gift of reading with those less fortunate.

Excitement is building, lists are being made, TBR piles are already toppling...

Someone waves to Sammy, gesturing for them to come in to join the fun, and soon another new person will take their place and they too will be welcomed.

Above the throng, sitting at her desk watching everyone, sipping cup after cup of strong tea and typing madly away on her laptop sits Lorie, an odd little smile on her face....

ATTENTION CHALLENGERS!

The focus of this year’s challenge is to significantly benefit a charity that I can’t name but hope to shortly (we’re in discussion). In previous years the focus of the Book Challenge was to read 100 books in a calendar year. Last year we introduced the team aspect to assist readers who were unable to read 100 books/year to do so with others in a team format. Our new community platform allows us to accept participants into the challenge at any point throughout the year without cutting the sign ups off in January and without my having to build each individual blog and lose my mind. This year each book review is counted in one centralized counter and all blogposts feed into one central Challenge blog so Lorie doesn’t lose HER mind!Wink

This new focus renders the team aspect of the blogs somewhat moot in as much as we are now ALL one big team striving to reach one wonderful common goal together. However, I recognize that community members enjoyed the camaraderie of team reading. So, if readers wish to blog their reviews loosely grouped as teams by identifying them with a team tag then I will allow it. But, please make sure you register your team names with Lorie…and Keep Reading!

Jayne

This looks like it might be fun. Smile

Hi Mad. There should be an image button, in your posting options. You may have to refresh your screen to get it. It looks like a tree.

YAY! This is so exciting,

YAY! This is so exciting, and I like the new layout, even though it's a tad confusing still.

I've read about... 10 books, and I've blogged 4 of them so far, but I'm having a blast. I forgot how much fun this was last year. Hopefully some of my same friends remember me, or are even still here... =D

 Happy reading,
~Kristen

If life gives you lemons, give them to a lemonade stand and read!

your 7 books

Kathy K - This is a bit confusing..... I can't tell the blogs from the reviews and it is not as easy finding things yet.

Here's hoping I can find you

Help!

Lorie,

I have already messed up.  I was not thinking (how unusual) and I put my reviews that I had in my blog and not the Dream Teams, what do I do now?

Thanks for your help....

Hi Jeannie!

I know what you mean, the first time I looked at the Lobby, I couldn't quite figure out what I was seeing either, but to the left of each new post, there's either a "Forum topic", "Blog entry" or "Book Review" ... it took me awhile, but I did get it in the end... Embarassed

Hi guys.

Hi Kristen, welcome back.  I’m sure everyone will find each other quickly.

Jeannie. The reviews are all on the Book Challenge. Kathy’s personal blogs will be on her page. If you see one of her posts, just click her name and that'll open her poage. You can also search out users on this new site. Just type their username in the search bar and click search, then opt for users.

Susan, I’ll have to see if I can move them, after I get the team blog set up. Don’t worry, we’ll sort that out after.

Hi Mad. Can you do me a favour and do a hard refresh… hold the ctrl button down, and click refresh. Do this twice, it may reset you and give you back your image button.

newbie

Hello Everyone, I am brandnew to the Book Challenge this year! Smile I stumbled over last year's book challenge in the fall and thought, "Wow this is something I want  part of".   I have added four book reviews and am off to the library on my lunch break today.

Hi Sherilynn.

First, welcome. 4 books at lunch, I think you'll like it here.

Have you emailed me to confirm your participation b/c I don't have your username on my list so I'm wondering if you're one of the ladies who's username I'm waiting on.

If you have, could you help me match a name to an email? If not, could you email me? ehq2008_challenge@yahoo.com

Either way, thanks.

Book Review

Lorie,

I only blogged them, do I need to put them in the review section on the team log for them to go toward the count.  I am sure I will understand this by the end of the year (lol).  At least this year I will have the team to help me.

Thanks

Can I still join the challenge?

I heard about this last year and wanted to try it out this year, I am not sure how to sign on... Do I just email you Lorie?

Thanks

Oops, maybe I messed up, I have been adding book reviews, should I have waited until the team blogs are set up?  Sorry about that, I will stop now until told differently.

Yes, email me please Maureen.

Sherrilyn, in case you

Sherrilyn, in case you didn't get my reply, yes, that's all I needed, you're set now.

Cady ~ honestly, I don't know yet, about the team review blogging counting thing. (check out my eloquence lol)  I know how it was supposed to work but I need to make sure all the bugs are squashed before I potentially add to them.

Finding the other Members

I was wondering where I find the list of other people in the challenge. This new format until I get use to it is confusing. I have 4 books to blog about. thanks

So Cool !!! ..... did you notice the Book Counter????

as of 10:30 EST we are at 249 books!!!  .... AWESOME Surprised

~~ KatherineT ~ I'm a Harlequin Addict, and I'm proud of it! ~~

What qualifies as a book? I

What qualifies as a book? I just finished reading this e-book that was 140 pages... is that a novella, or a novel?

Happy reading,
~Kristen

If life gives you lemons, give them to a lemonade stand and read!

Cheryl ~ If you see a post

Cheryl ~ If you see a post from someone you recognize click their name, it'll take you to their page and you can see thier reviews there. You can also opt for the Blog page and look for people there.

Kristen ~ That would be a novella. We consider a book to be a minimum of 200 pages.

I've added some discussion points over in

the "How to add a Book Review" forum.  I thought about posting them here or in the "intro and rules" forum but they're all about posting reviews, so I chose there.

Anyway, please come by and put your opinion in!

TIA,

Penn

hm...

Not sure if I actually need to do anything since my blog seems to be working - and I've made two posts... but I was feeling left out so I thought I'd comment here and say - I'm happy to be back this year! ;-)
