Guardian's Keep (Unbound series) by Lori Devoti

Shapeshifers, garms, witches and Norse magic!

Kol Hildr, a shape shifter and a dual being with human and wolf forms can shimmer. He guards the portal at Guardian's Keep, a bar where hellhounds, warlocks, trolls and all sorts of beings cause trouble. Greed and power fuel all sorts of dark events in this magical world. Kelly, a twin witch, has seen the very depths of the evil that lurks behind the portal. When a woman asks for her assistance, Kelly is emboldened in her quest. First, she must come face to face with Kohl. Her twin sister trusts Kohl, but Kelly is not sure whom to trust, especially whether or not to trust the one man who could bring her entire mission to an end. Torn between his duty, indeed his life's purpose as a portal guardian, and this little witch who somehow awakens something in him, he may just be forced to choose what he knows and something all together more unfamilliar. When garm politics force him to choose sides, will he make a choice for love and will his journey to save Kelly make him risk losing everything?

I adore this book. I stayed up til 3:30am the night i started this book. I just could not put it down. It's not just the story but the way this author writes. The energy between Kohl and Kelly is not just said or portrayed but it comes thorugh in the author's very writing style, tone and chice of words. I enjoy the way Lori Devoti builds suspense with an object here that is out of place, a word spoken there, a certain odd alliance. Enjoyed the hint of garm politics with the Council and the rogues. The romance is fun and also the look at Norse mythology that underlies her paranormal world. I studying Medieval Icelandic in school. Lori's Devoti's books reawaken that love and also make it fun with the fictional context she creates from that mythology.

Now...what I really want to know is how a certain blogger's father would deal with a daughter explaining she was dating a garm after the hellhound! Lorie really comes up with some fun mini-challenge topics!

I loved
Lori Devoti's first Nocturne book (and Debiw's 2007 Challenge blog too) so much this book so much that I actually bought some buttons and a messenger
bag that say "Official Hellhound Lover" that I discovered from visiting
went her website at www.loridevoti.com --- I wear my hellhound gear
boldly around town despite the weird looks...or maybe to provoke them
so I can tell others about this great read. Unbound took me
from from werewolf scoffer to hellhound lover. Now, I think I am an Official Garm Lover too!

Garm: Human/wolf shape-shifters. Garms are guardians by nature. Garm serve as guardians to portals, other paranormal beings and worlds. Being a guardian is an essential part of what garm are. Losing their charge, whether a being or a portal, is like losing their purpose for existence. Without such a duty, they become rogue.

I just brought Guardian's

I just brought Guardian's Keep and I cannot wait to read it.  I haven't had the chance to read the first one but I will be adding that also to my tbr pile.

Garms

Hmmm.... I'll have to think about how my father would respond to a garm as I'm reading this one.  I'm feeling so ucky right now with a nasty head cold that I couldn't concentrate on this book at all.  And I definitely want to be able to appreciate the world building she does!!  In the meantime, I picked up another Love Inspired Suspense to read as I'm finding them to be quite enjoyable.  But I'm reading this one as soon as I can concentrate more as the first few pages were AWESOME!

first few pages

I loved this book. I loved the first. This one can be read as a stand-alone. Now, I am just chomping at the bit for her third one (Venge's story?). These are on my keeper shelf. Just can't wait to read them again. I might be a bit strange but I would sure love to ses Frenir get a book too...Frenir is soooo creepy! I just know there is a story to tell behind him.

I was so excited after reading the first few pages before the book even began that I couldn't sleep!!! Wink And I know who Deborah is too! Wink Debiw, I still giggle sometimes remembering your blog on the first book! Gotta be one of the best blogs of 2007!

Sorry to hear about your cold, debiw.  I am still waiting impatiently for my Steeple Hill order.  I think maybe things are still on holiday slow-down.  It took me forever to get my Nocturnes from the USPS.  I happened to talk to my UPS delivery man and he said they were still swamped with holiday shipments so it seems it is not just the USPS either.  Right now I am reading a MEdieval historical that has a mix of sweet innocence and intriguing medieval political alliances. Then I am switching entirely to a Room 59 book.  So glad you turned us on to that series.  It looks like one for both my dh and me.  We may also look into the Outlander series too.

Add to tbr

I know I have Unbound and it looks like I'll have to pick this up too.  And move them closer to that mountain tbr of mine.  That's the hardest part about these blogs - all these books scream "Read Me, Read Me".  So tough to choose . . . .

I'm just one act shy of joining the circus . . . .

TBR

oh, I know what you mean! I emptied a whole shelf January 1st just to see if I could keep up with the newest incoming in my TBR. Already, the shelf is almost entirely full, and I have not even gotten most of my subscriptions yet!

This Lori Devoti series is one of favorites!  I chose her first one for my 2007 Top Ten Read books.  In tems of my TBR, I would like to delve more into some of the older Nocturnes and also Worldwide Mysteries in my TBR.

Room 59

I finished the ROOM 59 book this morning and really enjoyed it.  I haven't blogged it yet but will soon.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.  It really brought up some interesting thoughts about world politics that I can't wait to discuss with you!  But since I've felt so badly, I was reading it quite slowly so I could process it all.  I'm reading a fantastic Love Inspired Suspense right now about a social worker; I rarely like books with social workers but this one is well done and doesn't have the ethical issue of the social worker falling in love with a client or a client's relative. I can't remember if I picked up one of the Outlander books to try.  I know I tried one of the Death Lands books and it was VERY gory.  I think I have another one somewhere around here~ a much older one.  Anyway, once I'm feeling better, I'm reading this Lori Devoti book!  And I hope your packages arrive soon~ I hate waiting on mail that takes forever to get here.

My next read

After I finish the Harlequin Historical I'm reading, this will be next.  I'v been denying myself the pleasure of reading this book since before Christmas!  I can't wait!

I got the signed book plates.  I asked for two, one for each of the books.  She sent me three, with a note to the effect "one for each book".  I have a sticker and a button.  I like the scruffy-looking hellhound.  I think it's cute. Laughing

"Come, now, you must have read at least one of those vapid governess novels. Doesn't the heroine always end up married off to one of her employer's sons?"

Yes I am a readalholic and I don't want the 12 step program!!!

Soon

I'm glad this one is so good. I really enjoyed Unbound and looking forward to this one. I really really want Venge's story though. After I read Unbound I went to her website to see when the others were coming out and there was a date but I've forgotten now. I will have to go back and write it down this time. Great review!

thanks

After 2 books, I am a total Lori Devoti fan!  The first book in the series is UNBOUND, the same name as the series.    The two work as stand alones too.  Unbound was  on my top ten list last year and I bet Lori Devoti will end up on my 2008 list.
