GUARDIAN OF JUSTICE by Carol Steward

book coverI'm always leery of books with social workers but this one really worked for me!

SYNOPSIS: It was supposed to be part of a ride along, an opportunity to increase relations between the police department and social services. Instead, Kira Matthews found herself facing a domestic dispute and drug dealers.  Officer Dallas Brooks can't believe he let Kira get caught in the middle.  Now, Kira and Dallas must work together in order to protect two children as well as a whole town from the deadly consequences of drug dealing.

MY THOUGHTS: I usually avoid books with social workers and probably would have skipped this one if I hadn't bought all of the January 2008 Love Inspired Suspense books.  However, having said that, let me say that this book truly highlights some of the dangers social workers face on a daily basis.  We walk into homes, unescorted and alone, without any true knowledge of what goes on behind those doors.  We take chances for usually such a pittance of a salary that others look askance at us as to why we bother.  This book reminds me of why we do "bother".  The safety of children is paramount and it is an obligation we as social workers feel deep in our hearts.  It's not an easy job and as Kira points out, it's not a job we are often rewarded or even appreciated for.  But it is a necessary job and one that has called to my heart since I was very young.  Thank you, Carol Steward, for putting this profession in such a true context, all while writing one fantastic book!
